Health insurance covers the cost of hospitalisation. But do you know what to do for dental treatment or when a dog bites you? Is that too covered under your health insurance policy?
It is not just hospitalisation that your health insurance policy covers. There are a lot of other benefits which insurers have started offering keeping in pace with evolving needs. Here is a list of four surprising things which you might be unaware of that your health insurance policy covers:
1. Free check-up: The Health insurance policies entitle policyholders to a free medical check-up once every four years. Most policyholders know about it. Still, experts say not more than 20-25 per cent of them go for it. As various diagnostic centres have different charges, the policyholder must check the amount he/she will be reimbursed under his policy. Generally, it is one per cent of the sum insured with some maximum limit. Instead of the amount, some insurers specify tests you can undergo.
2. Dental treatment: Several policies have a component of OPD and dental expenses are covered once in few years with sub-limits. For example, Apollo Munich covers dental procedures under its Easy Health and Maxima plans. The benefits can be availed after a three-year waiting period and include coverage for dental treatment for X-ray extractions, composite filings, root canal treatment and prescribed drugs. Moreover, dental treatments are generally covered only in high sum-insured health plans typically above Rs 20 lakh sum insured. However, this amount may not be sufficient.
3. Worldwide care: The option of worldwide care is generally offered to those who buy large covers. For example, Religare Health's Care is offered with Rs 50 lakh and Rs 60 lakh sum insured plans. Similarly, in Max Bupa, the option is available with the Platinum plan, which starts at Rs 15 lakh. Royal Sundaram's Lifeline Elite plan covers international treatment on cashless basis, including airfare cost of up to Rs 3 lakh.
4. Animal bite: Due to an increased incidence of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria, there has been increase in number of claims. Somesh Chandra, chief operating officer and chief quality officer, Max Bupa, says, "In the last financial year, total claims for vector-borne diseases have risen by more than 25 per cent."
